Libraries are essential to make the world's recorded knowledge and information accessible. In view of this philosophy, the American Library Association (ALA) recently adopted several priorities in its strategic long-range plan. The priorities are designed to promote efforts to ensure that every individual has access to information through the provision of library and information services and to promote the protection of intellectual freedom, including protection from censorship. Recommendations of the 1983 ALA Commission on Freedom and Equality of Access to Information included: 1. Libraries should develop policies to ensure that all people, regardless of economic station, should have equal access to information. 2. The government is responsible for formulating information dissemination policies that enhance consumer access. The ALA also has formed an organization to improve access to government information.
